Though not the only spice used in ancient Egyptian embalming, thyme has stood its own test. Unlike the monuments that we build, the plant carries within itself the capacity to regenerate. Its attractiveness to human beings has ensured the availability of plenty of cultivated ground in which to flourish. Steeples, meanwhile, crumble and return to the dust from whence they were mined.
